How to Calm Down
Have a conversation with your child and try to brainstorm different ways that you can calm down if you are upset or angry.
There are many different activities that we can do to change how we feel.
You can work together to write a list of ideas and stick it up on your fridge so that everyone in the family can look at it and get ideas when they’re upset.
Here are some ideas you can pull from when talking to your child:
- Do breathing exercises: Breathe in for a count of 4, hold for 4, and exhale for 4
- Go for a walk outside to clear your mind
- Go for a bike ride
- Do other types of exercise, such as dancing, skipping and jumping.
- Do some yoga, like a series of downward facing dog and upward facing dog poses
- Talk to a friend
- Do breathing exercises where you lay on your back and put a stuffed animal on your stomach and watch it go up and down as you breathe slowly
